Football betting in Nigeria: 1X2, odds and match checks

A football bet combines three choices: the match, the market and the stake. Before confirming, read exactly what must happen for your selection to win, which part of the match counts and how much of your naira budget is at risk.

Quick example: a hypothetical NGN 500 single bet at decimal odds of 2.40 returns NGN 1,200 if it wins. That includes your NGN 500 stake, leaving NGN 700 profit before any applicable deductions. If it loses, the NGN 500 stake is lost. These are teaching figures, not a current offer or prediction.

What 1, X and 2 mean

For a standard three-way match-result market, 1 means the home team wins, X means a draw and 2 means the away team wins. Read the teams in the order shown on the ticket, particularly for neutral venues or tournaments.

Imagine a fixture labelled Home Team v Away Team:

SelectionExample final score that winsExample final score that loses
1 — home win2–11–1 or 0–1
X — draw1–12–1 or 0–1
2 — away win0–11–1 or 2–1

This example assumes the ticket is for the normal-time result. A team can draw after normal time and still qualify after extra time or penalties. A selection called to qualify is therefore a different bet from a normal-time home or away win.

The IFAB match-duration law describes two 45-minute halves and allowances for lost time. That sporting rule does not determine a bookmaker’s settlement terms: check whether the selected market includes added time, extra time or penalties before confirming.

Calculate your return and profit in naira

For a winning single bet at decimal odds:

Return = stake × decimal odds
Profit = return − stake

Hypothetical NGN 500 singleReturn if it winsProfit if it winsStake lost if it loses
Odds 1.50NGN 750NGN 250NGN 500
Odds 2.00NGN 1,000NGN 500NGN 500
Odds 2.40NGN 1,200NGN 700NGN 500

The figures assume a settled cash single with no fees, deductions or bonus restrictions. A displayed potential return is not money already earned. Compare it with the accepted odds on the saved ticket, not an earlier price you saw while browsing.

A higher decimal price gives a larger potential return for the same stake; it does not establish that the selection is better value or likely to win. Set an affordable loss limit before choosing a stake. Do not increase it to recover an earlier loss.

Other common football markets

These simplified definitions help you read the ticket. The operator’s exact market wording and rules control the actual bet.

MarketWhat the selection meansImportant distinction
Double chance 1XHome win or drawAn away win loses; two covered outcomes do not make a guaranteed bet
Double chance X2Draw or away winA home win loses
Over 2.5 goalsAt least three total goals in the specified period2–1 wins; 1–1 loses
Under 2.5 goalsZero, one or two total goals in the specified period1–1 wins; 2–1 loses
Both teams to score — YesEach team scores at least once in the specified period1–1 qualifies; 2–0 does not

A first-half total is different from a full-match total. For an in-play bet, also check whether the market concerns the whole match or only what happens after acceptance. Never infer that from the price alone.

Check the fixture and Nigerian kick-off time

  1. Match the competition, team names and date. Men’s, women’s, youth, reserve and virtual events can use similar labels.
  2. Check the fixture with the competition organiser. Use our NPFL guide for local league research and Super Eagles guide for national-team context. CAF and FIFA sources are linked below for their competitions.
  3. Read the timezone shown by the fixture page and by the bookmaker. Nigeria uses West Africa Time, WAT (UTC+1). For example, 18:00 UTC is 19:00 WAT; do not add another hour if the page already displays local time.
  4. Check whether the event is pre-match or live. A delayed video stream is not a reliable indication of what the bookmaker has already processed.

A listed NPFL, Super Eagles or European fixture does not prove that a particular bookmaker currently offers that match or your chosen market. Search the exact event inside the operator’s current interface.

Before confirming a ticket

Read the selection aloud in one sentence: “NGN 500 on the home team to win in the period stated on this ticket, at these accepted odds.” If you cannot describe the condition clearly, return to the market explanation.

Check the stake, currency, accepted odds and potential return. Confirm whether you are placing a single or combining selections. An accumulator has different conditions: an ordinary losing leg can lose the combined ticket, even when other selections win. Learn the individual market before combining several.

For mobile setup, use the existing BetWinner app guide or 1xBet app guide. New-account instructions are separate from installing an app; keep access to the account you already use.

Postponed matches and settlement questions

Do not assume every postponed or abandoned fixture is refunded immediately. Find the relevant rule for that competition and market, including any rescheduling period, and save the accepted ticket ID.

If a result looks wrong, compare the ticket’s event and period with the recorded match result. A normal-time draw followed by a shoot-out win is a common reason that “my team qualified” does not answer whether the original bet won. Contact the operator through the account with the ticket ID, market wording and disputed status; never include your password or OTP.

A settled win and a bank withdrawal are separate steps. Use the Nigeria withdrawal guide for the account-to-bank process.
